“Orientalism” is a label that was attached in the middle of the 19th century to a new movement in the arts. However, in opera, Asia and Africa have played a significant role since much earlier times. We will survey this history with exciting video excerpts from stage productions of operas, some of which are well known, while others are hardly ever produced now. We will encounter many great singers who are known to us only in recordings that we are fortunate to have.
